I'm not dead!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 04:02 pm
Packing, packing, packing, throwing tons of stuff away, painting, renovating, fixing, and more packing. This is going to be my next few weeks. Well, that and looking for houses. With whatever programming I can fit in around the sides. Everything in the business works and will continue to work for the foreseeable future, but there are lots and lots of things that need to be coded, changed, and fixed. So my online activities are somewhat cut short. Stuff I have managed is mostly posting in various threads.
So, the machines I was waiting for arrived. Off to install 'em tomorrow! Spent all day getting stuff ready for that, and reading a strange fanfic called An Alien Walks Amongst Us. The most notable thing about this one is the strange pronoun choice. It switches points of view frequently, but calls each one of them "you" instead of "me". As in:

You all nod your heads at that.  You take out your map, looking at where you are.  Everypony comes up, taking a look.

Wait, who is you, and who are everypony else? Is there more than 1 of you? Is you me? No, you are clearly Lyra, and some of her friends, in this case. So hopefully there is more than one of you. You don't get it. The author just uses the word "you" for the point of view character and her friends because of reasons that you don't understand at all. Other than that, it's a pretty standard My Little Pony humans in Equestria fic. Why do I read these? After 3 hours of reading this fic, I now really feel like that should say "Why do you read these?" Because the broken pronouns are breaking my brain. It isn't like there is other grammar or writing fail here, so the author does know the rules she's violating. So It's definitely intentional strange. But...I've never read the plural you before. Or singular you, used in quite that fashion, either.
So, apparently we're doing this. Spent time meeting with real estate agents. Figuring out what needs to be done to the house on Wednesday. I was born here and lived here all my life and moving is terrifying! *moans*

On a slightly unrelated rant, Why why why why can't Drupal be as nice and easy as Wordpress? I host the blog for [livejournal.com profile] crazycathie. I vaguely remember that 3 years ago she wanted it to cross post everything to live journal for some reason or other. Apparently, that still works. I haven't touched it in well over a year and a half. It's all up to date, the spam filtering is still working, Live Journal and Facebook are still crossposting, everything stays up to date automatically without constantly failing, and I don't get any complaints about it, even when I move it from one server to another. The only time I had to touch it was to make some tiny ambiguous one-line change to a theme to do something I can't even remember. Or was that a different Wordpress that I never have to touch, either? Anyway, compare that to Drupal. Every single week it has a module with a failing update, or a core update that can't be applied automatically, or a database update that fails, or a spammer gets in and makes a mess, or something else needs to be jiggered and poked. And Drupal 8 doesn't look like it will fix any of that. But it will break everyone's Modules, just like drupal 7 did! How glorious. If Wordpress supported content types and payment gateways, I would just throw up my hands and use it for everything. As it is, I just have to keep screaming with irritation, and telling people that I don't have time for this right now.

Otherwise:

Now baseball and bed.
Well, today was the most productive day I've had in a while.

  • New business cards and logo are done, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] crazycathie

  • Finally, finally got bitcoind upgraded and working everywhere, with only minor problems with dependencies and Debian's version of the Berkeley DB development headers

  • Made a long post about Braille playing cards to [community profile] accessibility_win

  • Made a long and uncomfortable post about medical issues, depression, motivation, and other things in this thread

  • Figured out how to make forward-only email addresses in Citadel.

  • Figured out how to make forward-only email addresses in Citadel that actually work.

  • Some packages I've been waiting on for a few weeks finally shipped. Now only to get them through customs!

  • Spent an hour staring at the documentation for SPF records. Remembered why I don't use SPF records. Whitelisted some IP addresses in Google Apps. Pretended that solved the problem.

  • Fixed up some A-records that I didn't even realize were broken and changed dynamic DNS, so the root of several domains no longer points to a random residential IP address that doesn't even have any open ports. Go me! Remind me why I'm allowed to be in charge of servers, again?

  • Looked for the cat. Could not find the cat. Did not pet the cat. Felt briefly sad.

  • Tread-milled because it's cloudy and yucky outside.

  • A real estate agent came to drop off some information. He'll be back tomorrow. Boo.

  • Added a dentist appointment to my iCal. Double boo.

  • Did a bunch of bitcoin related administrivia.

I still have some time and energy left, so I'm off to try my hand at fixing a Drupal upgrade failure that I promised I was going to fix 4 months ago. *deep sigh* Why is Drupal so cranky and needy? After that, I'll enjoy some baseball, and then crash, perhaps with the help of a sleeping pill thanks to the recent insomnia.

Boing!

Yeah, that is the sound of spring springing at last! Got to go out for a walk in my spring jacket over lunch. And to think, 2 years ago at this time, we had already had several BBQs on the porch. So: was today more productive than yesterday? Well, meh. Look on the mighty record of my accomplishments, ye slackers, and sympathize:

  • Recced Browncoat, Green Eyes to [community profile] crossovers, because it's a classic, and I was in a Firefly kind of mood

  • The 10 decks of braille playing cards I ordered from Amazon arrived in the mail. If you need braille playing cards, order these! Specialty stores want like $25 for a single braille deck, and these are like $9, and better quality. Would order again!

  • Got the accounting done for this month

  • Got involved in this thread that started off being about places to get described TV, and drifted off into discussing My Little Pony fanfics, how bad Doctor Who novels are, and why people shouldn't call things they dislike gay. Yay for topic drift that's almost entirely my fault!

  • Read a bit more of Harry, a History. Not enjoying it as much as I expected to, honestly.

  • Talked about logos for the business cards. Hopefully we'll be printing new ones tomorrow or Saturday

And now I'm going to listen to the baseball on the fan, and head to bed. Impressive, huh? Things have been kind of in a lull this week. Next week and the week after are going to be crazy busy, though. I wish I could spread some of that stuff into now!

Let's hope tomorrow is just a bit more productive!

Quick Test Post

Monday, March 31st, 2014 09:52 pm
So, this is just a quick test post. I want to see what the posts are actually like, and how the posting screen works, and just otherwise go on a test drive.

I've been looking for something less irritating, and more communal, than Wordpress to post things. Tumblr has the worlds most annoying layout. Livejournal turned evil. Postagon deletes things way too quickly, and isn't particularly communal. Google's blogging service is no more community than Wordpress. I used to like Livejournal though, so maybe this will fit.

What sorts of things am I going to post? Well, let's see. I'm working on maybe moving from Toronto to Ottawa in the near future, I'm involved with Bitcoin, and I have a bunch of other projects on the go. So these are interesting times, for me. Though I doubt anyone else will be interested in them. Never the less, you can expect an odd mix of self-reflection, book reviews, technical discussion, fanfic recommendations, links, and I dunno what else. But the writing, it makes me feel good. So yeah.
